Balloon Blowing for Myofunctional Therapy: Building Breath Control

Balloon blowing is a powerful yet playful way to support orofacial myofunctional therapy goals. This simple activity helps strengthen oral muscles and teaches proper breathing mechanics which are two key components of healthy orofacial function.

During balloon blowing, we guide children to use diaphragmatic (belly) breathing rather than relying on shallow upper chest breaths. Placing a hand on the belly while blowing can help increase awareness of this movement. The focus is on steady, controlled airflow and encouraging nasal breathing before and after each attempt.

Not only does balloon blowing improve muscle strength and coordination, but it also reinforces healthy breathing patterns that support speech, swallowing, and overall airway function.
