What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Have you ever noticed a child who breathes through their mouth, struggles with clear speech, or has trouble keeping their lips closed at rest? These signs may be linked to orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs)—and that’s where myofunctional therapy comes in.
Myofunctional therapy is a specialized treatment that targets the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue. It helps retrain these muscles to function properly for everyday activities like breathing, swallowing, and speaking. This therapy is often used to support kids and adults with speech sound disorders, orthodontic issues, tongue thrust, sleep-disordered breathing, and more.
In therapy, we focus on exercises that improve tongue posture, nasal breathing, and muscle coordination. It’s non-invasive, engaging, and highly personalized.
If you or your child struggles with mouth breathing, articulation challenges, or habits like thumb sucking, a myofunctional assessment may be a great first step. Let’s work together to build strong, healthy habits—starting with the muscles that matter most.
