Summer Activities

When summer hits, it’s a busy time of vacations and summer camps. Luckily there’s tons of language opportunities for our little ones. When preparing for a day out, let your child assist in the preparation. Make a list of things you need to bring and have them help you grab the items. Cross each item off the list together. (towel, check).

Another great way to elicit language is planning an fun at home activity such as chalk, water guns, water balloons, or squishy water balls and a bucket. Some language models are provided below

  • Make balloon

  • Blue chalk

  • More chalk

  • Make sun

  • More water

  • Get wet

  • 3, 2, 1 go

  • Throw ball

  • Wet ball

  • Oh no!

  • Run away

  • Get me

  • Got you!

  • It’s hot

  • I want more

  • All done

  • Go inside

  • Go outside

  • Not like

  • This is fun

When doing fun outdoor activities, you can let your child choose between 2 choices for a cold treat (“do you want a blue or red popsicle?” “do you want strawberries or grapes?”)

No matter what your summer looks like, it’s fun and educational to talk to your kids about the plan ahead of time and reflect back on it for storytelling. Have a great summer and stay cool!
